School is a lot—between homework, sports, clubs, part-time jobs, and just trying to keep up with everything, finding time to chill can be tough. But what if you could take a break, escape into a good story, and win prizes for it?
100 Books Before Graduation is a free reading initiative from Swanton Public Library designed to inspire students in grades 6–12 to read 100 books before they graduate. We know that high school is a busy time and 100 books is a lot, but reading can provide stress relief, increase empathy, improve your vocabulary, and develop your writing skills. Also — IT’S FUN! You get the opportunity to read 100 books of your choice, enjoy fun prizes along the way, and major bragging rights!
You are challenged to read 100 books of your choice and to write 4 (short but thoughtful) book reviews, one for every 25 books you read. All challengers will receive prizes after finishing 25, 50, and 75 books, and finishers who reach 100 books will receive a $100 gift card to Barnes & Noble! At the end of summer break, all readers who’ve reached at least one milestone (either 25, 50, 75, or 100!) from the previous year will be invited to a bowling party for free fun, pizza, and entry into that year's grand prize drawing!
Not convinced yet? Studies have shown reading for pleasure and enjoyment has a positive impact both academically and socially and contribute to an improvement in emotional health and well-being. Reading for pleasure can:
- Result in higher test scores
- Improve reading achievement
- Increase social skills
- Reduce stress
- Help cure boredom
The earliest you can sign up is June 1 before your first year of sixth grade, though you can sign up anytime if you’re in grades 6-12. You have until August 1 of your senior year of high school to reach 100 books.
