YOUTH VIRTUAL BOOK CLUBS Check out our do-it-at-home book clubs for all ages. All we ask is that you read the book: do as much or as little of the rest of it as you want. No matter how much you do, the book is yours! There are four age categories: grades K-3, grades 3-5, grades 5-8, and grades 9-12. Every book comes with links to explore, a review form, a few questions, and some activities that tie into the book. We will have posts on www.splyouth.org for anyone who wants to discuss the books or comment on the activities. Supplies are limited, so grab yours today! Grades K-3: The Little Red Hen by Lucinda McQueen “The Little Red Hen works hard – all alone! – to turn her wheat seed into flour, while the goose gossips, the dog naps, and the cat preens. But when her lazy friends smell the fresh bread baking, they’re eager to help her eat it!” (TLRH, 1985). Grades 3-5: Clementine by Sara Pennypacker “Clementine is NOT having a good week. On Monday she’s sent to the principal’s office for cutting off Margaret’s hair. On Tuesday, Margaret’s mother is mad at her. On Wednesday, she’s sent to the principal, again. On Thursday, Margaret stops speaking to her. Then Friday starts with yucky eggs and only gets worse. And by Saturday, even her mother is mad at her. Okay, fine. Clementine is having a DISASTROUS week. But maybe she can find a way to make it better,” (Clementine, 2008). |
Grades 5-8: Chasing Space (Young Readers Edition) by Leland Melvin “When the former Detroit Lion’s football career was cut short by an injury, Leland didn’t waste time mourning his broken dream. Instead, he found a new one – something that was completely out of this world. He joined NASA, braved an injury that nearly left him permanently deaf, and still managed to muster the courage and resolve to travel to space on the shuttle Atlantis to help build the International Space Station. Leland’s problem-solving methods and can-do attitude turned his impossible-seeming dream into reality. Leland’s story introduces readers to the fascinating creative and scientific challenges he had to deal with in space and will encourage the next generation of can-do scientists to dare to follow their dreams,” (CS, 2018). Grades 9-12: The Call of the Wild by Jack London “Buck is an unusual dog, part St. Bernard, and part Scotch shepherd, with wolf blood in his ancestry. He is enjoying his comfortable life as a family pet in California when dog traffickers, who are meeting the demand for sled dogs in the Alaskan gold rush, steal him. The harsh winter is like nothing he has ever experienced, and each day with the sled dog team is a very real struggle for survival. Pushed to the limit, Buck finds instincts he didn’t know he had – primordial urges deep within him are being awakened,” (TCotW, 2001 edition).
